I was reading the life story of Amy Carmichael, A Chance to Die. She told the Lord, “Do anything, Lord, that will fit me to serve Thee and help my beloveds.” That evening as she was walking home in the dark she fell into an open grave. She broke her leg, dislocated her ankle and twisted her spine. Because of this injury she was bed-ridden for the rest of her life, which was another 20 years. But out of those 20 years came 34 books that otherwise would have never been written. We never know God’s ways. In our eyes we want life pain free, accident free and tragedy free; but, God sees our short life as a ripple. A ripple spreads only once, and it can touch the world only once; and only through agitation will the ripple go farther. God sees eternity, while we see today. The good of others that comes from our agitations of sufferings is not to be compared to the joys we’ll have in heaven. “The sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us” (Romans 8:18). I’m sure that we will have willingly suffered any pains ten times over once we get to heaven and see all the good that came out of it, even for people we never knew.
Thought for Today: Our life is but a ripple. May we spread and touch others for Christ.
